Ever wish you could explore the worlds, the spacecraft and sets in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey directed by Stanley Kubrick and written with Arthur C. Clarke? Now you can, in VR! These models were created with X3D*, the successor to VRML.
Sit inside the Orion III cockpit and watch the moving navigation displays as you rendezvous with Space Station 5. Get a close look at the Discovery spacecraft; click on the pod bay doors to open them. Sit inside a Space Pod and fly it around the Discovery. Walk inside Space Station 5 and also inside the Discovery Centrifuge!
These VR worlds are under ongoing development using the free and open source 3D software Blender, so please visit often to view the updates.
The code that allows you to see these worlds is X_ITE, a new JavaScript library that uses WebGL for 3D rendering of X3D content. Since X3D is backward compatible, X_ITE can also be used as a VRML viewer! There is no need to have a plugin any longer!
New! Now you can use your VR headset (such as Meta Quest) for an immersive experience of these worlds! Nothing to download; just plug in.
